A residential pool project was recently completed by Gillette Brothers Pool & Spa in Troy, Michigan using our GT064 Night Sky Blend. Gillette Brothers has been in business for over 25 years and has extensive experience in custom pool design and construction.

GT064 Night Sky Blend is SCS certified containing 98% pre-consumer recycled material and is suitable for interior and exterior use, walls, countertops, backsplashes, light residential floors and pools.

Sixth Grade Mosaic Project

Hakatai tile was used in this year's 6th grade mosaic project at Islander Middle School in Washington. 350 students worked together to create 6 mosaic pillars in their school. The theme was "IMS Reads!" and each of the pillars included books related to a particular genre.

"This enrichment project is part of the 6th grade Language Arts/Social Studies curriculum that focuses on Ancient Cultures. Beautiful mosaic art left behind in many ancient cultures gives us a glimpse of life long ago. Creating mosaics gives the students a hands-on opportunity to be an artisan and leave behind a lasting legacy for the class of 2016," explains Artist-in-residence Sandy Glass. "Teachers and the librarian helped students pick books within various genres. Students created their mosaic art on mosaic mesh. Parent volunteers provided extra hands in the classroom and a dedicated team of parents and a few community members installed, grouted and sealed the mosaic pillars."

Tile Mosaics at Alaska Middle School

Hakatai tile was used as part of the Artists in the Schools program at Randy Smith Middle School in Fairbanks, Alaska. Artist Sara Tabbert worked with students to create mosaic pieces that could be permanently mounted in the interior of the school building.

"Students were given the task of working on an image from their natural surroundings as a cut paper mosaic. I introduced them to the work of designer and artist Charley Harper as a model for how to simplify forms from nature and make interesting compositions that we could translate into larger designs. The students then voted for six images to reproduce in mosaic tile - two images were done as 4' squares, and then we combined three bird images in a long narrow 2'x8' piece to go above a doorway," Sara says. "Kids did the design, cut the tiles, made most of the color choices, glued everything in place, and helped with the grouting. Everyone worked on all the pieces, and it was great to see the excitement build as the pieces came together. Much fun was had by all."

Hometown Remodel for Hakatai

Joseph Eichler Home Remodel

In post-war California a visionary developer and home builder emerged and forever changed the landscape with ideas and concepts considered far too radical at the time for conventional mid-century America. Joseph Eichler built more than 11,000 homes between 1950 and his death in 1974, collaborating with established architects to accomplish his mission of designing open, inclusive planned communities for middle-class families. His particular brand of mid-century architecture would later place him among the most influential home builders of his or any era, now glowingly referred to in current times simply as “California Modern.”

Eichler left his largest impression on the landscape of Northern California where the vast majority of his homes were built. From the San Francisco Bay to Sacramento, San Mateo, San Jose, Palo Alto and back again, Eichler’s forward thinking architectural concepts and savvy designs transcended his time and left a lasting legacy on how Americans felt about home building. Eichler, though a true pioneer in his field, was not alone in his preference for glass mosaic tile as a major component of his design schemes during this period. This versatile, sleek and flexible design element experienced its golden era during the mid-century, but in recent years has enjoyed a prominent revival and place in contemporary design.

Hakatai has plenty of experience in providing products for remodeling mid-century homes and offering a myriad of design options and custom tools for new homes across America. We've gained a wide-spread reputation for consistently supplying high-quality glass mosaic tile, friendly service and affordable pricing, but recently had the special opportunity to travel back in time with the creative design of Karman Ng, principal of Cantilever Design (www.cantilever-design.com). Ng was hired for the delicate remodel of a hall bathroom in an Eichler original home in Palo Alto. After discovering Hakatai a few years back Ng knew exactly where to go for glass mosaic tile.

The signature of an Eichler has always been the integration of the outdoors with the inside of the home. Some of the terms that describe his design themes would be open, spacious, and airy, but most of these principals were applied to the common areas of the home and not necessarily the bathrooms. This challenge of space, considering the 5’ x 8’ hallway bathroom with 8-foot ceilings for the young couple’s two boys, was the major issue Ng hoped to address when he began laying out his design program. In addition to several other clever and well thought out solutions, Ng specified Hakatai’s Ashland-e collection of recycled content glass mosaic tile in the color Crystal Blue to create a fresh and more spacious feel.

Eichler also made standard the concept of implementing a second full bathroom inside the master bedroom. The “first” bathroom would serve the children or guests of the home and be located in the common hall they share. This was precisely the case with the Palo Alto home remodel. Ng’s choice of transparent glass mosaics lightened and brightened up the small bathroom, but the tile’s rustic elegance and handmade character added a dose of sophistication at the same time.

Hakatai’s Ashland-e series glass mosaic tile is comprised of between 30 and 70 percent glass from bottles and/or waste glass that would otherwise have entered the solid waste stream. This waste glass is a mix of approximately 90 percent post-consumer recycled content and 10 percent pre-consumer materials.

As with most visionaries before and after, Eichler’s homes and ideas were never fully appreciated until years later when the context and scope of his achievements were uncovered as ever-nostalgic America reflected back on a period in time that defined both where we had been and where we were going. Eichler’s desire to bring the outdoors inside incorporated open floor plans through post and beam construction, large foyers, windows and skylights to bring in natural sunlight. Many of his design elements have stood the test of time and become mainstream features of almost any style of home built since.

Hakatai Glass Tile Used in Red Cross Offices

Hakatai Classic series tile was used in the "red crosses" at two American Red Cross offices in Louisiana. Hakatai donated the tile for the state-of-the-art COOP (Contiunuity of Operations Plan) building in Goodbee, LA. The new facility was created to enable the disaster response agency to provide a services quickly in the event of an emergency.

Hakatai tile was also used at the Southeast Louisiana Chapter's headquarters on Canal St. in New Orleans.

San Francisco Designer Remodels with Hakatai

Hakatai recently provided Stacy Burket and Trixie Martelino of TAGR Design with the glass mosaic tile colors and tools they needed to complete a private home bathroom remodel of a loft space in San Francisco’s trendy South of Market district.

TAGR Design put the nearly limitless color and design possibilities offered by Hakatai to good use, creating an eye-friendly blend with five colors from two different series for a full glass mosaic tile shower wall and bathroom floor. Utilizing Hakatai’s innovative custom blend tool on the web, Burket was able to perfectly meet his customer’s desire for a subtle, brown color scheme, but mix and match the percentages of colors and tiles in the blend to satisfy his own design goals.

With the color brown in mind, Burket visited Hakatai's custom blend tool and selected four colors from the Aventurine collection of nature-inspired ¾” x ¾” mosaics, added a small percentage from the iridescent Luster series in the same size, and then adjusted the amount of each color until he found the mix and look he wanted. The four colors from Aventurine: Honey, Rosewood, Henna and White Alder, touched off by the iridescent Luster color Snow, created an entirely new and fresh look for this trendy loft remodel.

“We found out about Hakatai about six or seven years ago at a trade show in Florida,” said Burket. “(Hakatai) seems to be a little more into design and presentation than other suppliers out there. They don’t just throw the product at you. They present it well and that makes it appealing. We liked the price. They get it to you fast, and with Hakatai you can do custom blends right online. Hakatai has great colors, but they also have a great depth of colors and textures.”

In June of 2009, Hakatai began a partnership with GreenShipping.com to provide carbon-neutral shipping on our FedEx Ground and Expedited orders. Green Shipping uses a carbon shipment calculator to determine the CO2 emissions generated by each shipment. Once the package has completed its journey and the calculations are complete, Hakatai purchases carbon offsets to neutralize the shipment's effect on climate change.

Hakatai’s carbon offsets are purchased from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. The offset dollars are used to fund BEF wind power projects across the U.S. Besides reducing CO2 emissions, the projects also reduce other pollutants and help to create green jobs in the U.S. Any funds that are left over from these projects are reinvested in other BEF projects, such as renewable energy education programs for children and watershed restoration.

Deep in the Heart of Texas

Hakatai glass mosaic tile found a home “deep in the heart” of Texas when Urban Jobe Architecture specified the top-selling Classic series for the remodel of the kitchen and two bathrooms of a mid-‘80s Austin residence. After discovering Hakatai nearly five years ago during her own home remodel, Camille Urban Jobe, AIA, kept its mosaic glass tile collections in her “back pocket” until the need to add color and texture arose for the remodel of a young couple’s home.

Urban Jobe, who holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley, had her clients visit the Hakatai website and select all the colors they liked from the Classic series. She then designed all three spaces, including materials and appliances, around the glass mosaic tile colors they chose. With a minimalist, neutral theme in mind, Urban Jobe added texture to the kitchen space with a Classic Oak Blend backsplash in two different sections of the open design kitchen in the center of the home. The ¾” x ¾” glass mosaics helped create an entirely new look and style for the kitchen, which she describes as “crisp and handsome.”

For the master bath, Urban Jobe created a beautiful new space with glass mosaics in the colors Teak and Hail. She created a custom blend using Hakatai’s online custom blend tool for the shower interior and a decorative half-wall, which is complemented by solid color tile in the tub surround, vanity, and soap and shampoo niches.

The young Austin homeowners had one small child and another on the way during the remodeling of the home, so Urban Jobe designed the second bath with children in mind. The resulting bathroom is equally as breathtaking and interesting as the master bath. Bursting with clean, refreshing color, Urban Jobe created a full wall with glass mosaics in the color Ice Blue, that runs directly into the tub and shower walls. With water-inspired colors as the theme, she made the room pop with Classic Light Blue/Ice Green Blend tile for the shower niche. This playful accent serves to highlight the smooth-looking, solid color that covers the rest of the room.

“I had used Hakatai about five years ago when remodeling my own home,” said Urban Jobe. “I don’t have any complaints at all. They have a wide range of colors available and the tiles are always very regular in size, which makes it very flexible and a lot of fun to design with. They have a lot of great sales, and most of Hakatai products come mesh-mounted which the installers find much easier to work with.”

Historic Home Remodel in Sacramento

Blogster Joshua Lurie-Terrell was so impressed with the Hakatai glass mosaic tile that he chose for the kitchen remodel of his 1926 craftsmen bungalow in Sacramento, California, that he made an effort to find other materials that matched or complimented the tile, rather than the usual other way around.

Lurie-Turrell had searched for a modern surface finish that would accent the kitchen, but not overpower the historical elements of his 84 year old home. He was able to find the right product, in the perfect color, online at www.hakatai.com. Lurie-Turrell chose 35 square feet of ¾” x ¾” mesh-mounted tile in the color Jade from Hakatai’s top-selling Classic series for his DIY project. The result is a subtle, yet highly-refined glass mosaic backsplash that runs along the entire wall behind the stove and sink, above an elegant natural stone countertop.

“I used to live in Oregon and I still go back every year to visit,” said Lurie-Terrell. “I was up there a few years ago and in two different settings there was this beautiful glass tile, one in a house and the other in a restaurant. I asked both places where it came from and they told me it was Hakatai. Ever since then I have been a big fan. The Hakatai glass tiles were absolutely perfect. Everything was done just how it should be. I actually liked Hakatai’s color Jade so much that I had to go out and find a countertop that matched it, and not the other way around. Lurie-Turrell’s residence sits in a peaceful Sacramento neighborhood formally known as Boulevard Park, among rows and rows of historical craftsmen bungalows and mission-style homes built by the same developer in the late 1920s through the early ‘50s. As a dedicated and active fan of this era in American architecture, Lurie-Turrell visits plenty of mid-century homes on the beat for fresh ideas and new concepts for his blog, aptly titled Hewn & Hammered.

“To begin with, I was really impressed with Hakatai’s selection of colors,” said Lurie-Terrell. “They have a lot of earthy, natural tones that go great with historical homes from this era. Rock City

These colorful tile sculptures are located in Dalstrom Park in Memphis, Tennessee. The sculptures were commissioned as part of the City's "Percent for Art" Program, which dedicates a percentage of city funds to public art installations. The Dalstrom Park sculptures were created by artist Suzy Hendrix, using Hakatai glass tile and her own kiln fired glass designs. The work is inspired by the Zen rock gardens of Japan.

Hakatai at the Zoo

Hakatai’s glass mosaic mural program was used by the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Michigan, to help celebrate its award-winning “Arctic Ring of Life” habitat, named one of the top zoo exhibits in the United States by The Intrepid Traveler’s guide to “America’s Best Zoos.” Hakatai supplied a glass mosaic mural in the precise likeness of the Zoo’s Arctic Ring of Life logo, polar bear included, which was installed in the Arctic food court adjacent to the exhibit.

Krieger Associates, a full service architecture and design firm, recommended Hakatai and its glass mosaic mural program to Robert Harris, general manager of Service Systems Associates, the food service contractor for the Detroit Zoo. Harris submitted an electronic copy of the logo to Hakatai’s team of experienced designers and mosaic artists, who were able to reproduce a stunning simulation including the various textures, colors and exact details of the logo. The simple-cut, 4’ x 6.5’ mural was delivered in numbered sheets for a quick and easy installation.

“It’s been a great experience working with Hakatai,” Harris said. “The customer service was exceptional, especially when we needed support during the installation. The project was completed on time and priced as promised.”

Detroit Zoo’s Arctic Ring of Life is a $14.9 million interactive facility encompassing over four acres of indoor and outdoor exhibits. The most spectacular feature of the habitat is the 70-foot long Frederick and Barbara Erb Polar Passage. This clear tunnel winds through a vast underwater environment where guests will encounter diving and swimming polar bears and seals. The Detroit Zoo has been a leader in the exhibition and breeding of polar bears since the opening of its first polar bear exhibit in 1928 and the Arctic Ring of Life is now the largest polar bear exhibit in North America. Hakatai supplied the tile for the eye-catching “sun” discs at the top of a new landmark sculpture at the El Paso Sun Metro Downtown Transfer Terminal in Texas. The 25-foot tall, structural steel sculpture set on a six-foot concrete base is titled “Confluencia,” Spanish for confluence. Hakatai Tiles Add to LEED Platinum Home

Hakatai helped Vision Development achieve LEED for Homes Platinum-level certification for the “Tree House Project.” Marty Meisler, principal at Vision Development, specified 675 square feet of Hakatai’s Ashland-e series glass mosaic tile for the home, located in the Studio City district of Los Angeles, California. All tile in the Ashland-e series is comprised of between 30 and 70 percent glass from bottles and/or other waste glass that would otherwise have entered the solid waste stream. This waste glass is a mix of approximately 90 percent post-consumer and approximately 10 percent pre-consumer material. The Ashland-e series is available in many colors and several finishes, as well as in 1” x 1” and 1” x 2” subway-style glass mosaics.

Meisler, a certified sustainable building advisor, took advantage of the wide range of colors and styles available in Hakatai’s Ashland-e series, using the glass mosaics for a full wall in the kitchen, as well as extensively in the master bath, children’s bath and powder room inside the house. Outside, Ashland-e was used for the pool trim at the water level and for the outdoor shower.

“Hakatai recycled content glass tiles helped us max out the environmentally-friendly products category,” said Meisler. “We did a lot of research to find the right products and Hakatai made the cut. The high recycled content was very appealing to us. The colors were great and they matched the vision we had for the aesthetic of the house. We’re very happy with how it came out. The product is very attractive. Everybody that sees the tile work says it’s gorgeous and can’t believe it has recycled content.”

The Ashland-e series fit well with Meisler’s modern, contemporary design goals and was used abundantly throughout the project. The Tree House kitchen has a 100 square foot, full wall of Ashland-e in Light Olive. The master bath used 245 square feet of Ashland-e 1” x 2” glass tiles in Silver Spring Blend for three walls, the double sink backsplash, jacuzzi tub deck and surround, and a full shower. The children’s bath used 210 square feet of Ashland-e in Clear Cobalt for the two-sink vanity and backsplash, as well as the shower. The powder room features 21 square feet of Clear Ice glass mosaics. For the pool trim and outdoor pool shower, 100 square feet of Ashland-e was used in Clear Icicle Blend.

The Tree House is the first certified “Green” home in the San Fernando Valley. The 2,400 square foot house participated in the Southern California Gas Company’s Advanced Home Case Study Program. The goal was to identify products and measures that enhance sustainability, durability, energy and water efficiencies, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort of the home. The 20 foot-wide, two-story, four bedroom, 2.5 bath Tree House was designed to maximize passive solar heating and cooling. In conjunction with spray-in foam insulation, quality windows and doors, energy efficient lighting and appliances, and a cool roof, the house exceeds California’s Title 24 energy requirements by a remarkable 61 percent.

Panda Express Builds Brand with Hakatai Mosaic Mural

Hakatai recently began supplying custom glass mosaic murals to Panda Express, the fastest growing Chinese restaurant chain in North America. Hakatai’s first brand-building mural, at the restaurant’s original location in Rosemead, California, is an impressive 490 square feet in size. The mural covers the entire top half of two entrance walls, connecting at the front exterior corner to create a welcoming panda image.

While exhibiting at a hospitality design show in 2008, Hakatai met top brand developers from the Panda Restaurant Group and a plan was developed for a series of glass mosaic murals at several Panda Express locations. Utilizing Hakatai’s innovative custom mosaic mural program, the designers at Panda Express are able to submit a drawing to Hakatai’s in-house design team, who fine tune the mural design before passing it along to their skilled team of mosaic artists. At the Rosemead location, the colors A20 China, C39 Night Black and D41 Lava, from Hakatai’s top-selling Classic series, were used to create the stunning black and white panda, accented by a deep red background. The mural stands nearly 14 feet from top to bottom on both walls. The mural measures 16 wide on the left side and 18 feet wide on the right. The mural was delivered to the restaurant site mounted on numbered mesh-backed sheets and ready to install. The mural was installed over a cement masonry unit.

Panda Restaurant Group is a leading Asian foodservice provider, and one of the largest family-owned businesses in North America. The well-known brand includes Panda Express, five Panda Inn locations serving gourmet Mandarin and Szechuan cuisine in a more upscale environment, and 28 quick service, Japanese-style Hibachi-San locations. The panda mural from Hakatai has proven to be highly successful for the chain, and several more custom murals in varying sizes are in progress for other Panda Express locations, including the Fox Hills Mall in Southern California, the Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Orlando International Airport in Florida.

Hakatai glass mosaic tile has played an important role in several Mather Architectural Design projects over the years. Wendy Mather, M.A., has found Hakatai tile to be an affordable surfacing option, adding color and depth to her projects in a variety of different ways. Hakatai offers hundreds of colors and styles for Mather to reach her design goals. Her most recent residential project highlights the versatility of Hakatai glass mosaic tile, which can be quickly and easily ordered online.

In the Montclair neighborhood on the east side of Denver, Colorado, Mather was chosen to lead the interior design efforts for the new home of a brain surgeon and a commercial photographer. The modern, two-story house now boasts over 350 square feet of Hakatai glass mosaics. Mather takes particular joy from the work done in the bathroom for the homeowner’s twin boys. With 12” x 12” beige porcelain field tiles throughout, Mather wanted to add a splash of color. Mather ordered “Mixed Bags” of loose ¾” x ¾” glass mosaics from Hakatai, containing the complete spectrum of colors from the extensive Classic series. This colorful assortment was used to replace the large field tiles at random intervals. Mather used this process both in the shower and on the bathroom floor, pulling the entire room together by using the Mixed Bag glass mosaics for the double-sink countertop and backsplash. The result is a vibrant, colorful room befitting a pair of young boys.

“The twins’ bathroom looks great,” said Mather (http://www.matherarch.com/). “Hakatai provides a high-quality, but affordable way to add color and detail to designs. The colors come random and mixed, it really added a lot to the twins’ bathroom. We even tiled the soap dish in the shower. It’s just a really great space now, perfect for two little boys.”

In the master bath, Mather and the homeowners took a different approach, using Hakatai’s online Custom Blend Tool to create a unique blend of blue, green, grey and white tiles. Mather surfaced the two-sink countertop and backsplash with this blend, and also used the same blend for a curving shower bench. Mather then added what she describes as a “cool fade,” using Hakatai’s online Custom Gradient Tool to create a custom gradient wall to complement both the glass tile blend and the light tan ceramic shower floor tiles.

Hakatai Tile in Modern Asian Restaurant

Hakatai glass mosaic tile was used as a focal point in the design of Sesame Asian Kitchen, a new Asian-fusion restaurant located in Ashland, Oregon. Owners Tom and Lisa Beam wanted an open and airy dining space that would highlight the gorgeous view afforded by the large picture windows at the front of the restaurant. They consulted with designer Ivor Brown of Slant Studio in Emeryville, California, to create a color palette and finalize details of the project.

The restaurant looks out over historic Lithia Park, which was designed by the same landscape architect as Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The unique colors used in the restaurant echo the lush and changing scenery visible through the windows. Pale green walls and sunny bamboo flooring are contrasted by deep orange glass tile accents and prominent white paper lanterns. While the view may be the star, the choice of glass mosaics as the surface for the bar area wall and two columns is central to the overall effect. “It’s the tile that really sets the whole project off and makes it exceptional,” said Tom Beam.

Hakatai’s Classic series ¾” x ¾” tile in the color Dusk was used for the front and back wall of the bar, as well as on two supporting columns in the main dining area. The tiled columns draw the room together and act as a focal point in the design. “I would not have been as happy with the result if they were just painted,” said Beam. Glass tile was also used on a custom hosting stand at the restaurant’s entrance. The stand was crafted by Bennett Stone and Tile, of Medford, Oregon, who also did the tile installation for the rest of the project. The curved surface of the columns and the stand “really catch the light,” said Beam. “I’m super happy with how it turned out.”

Hakatai Tile in Award-Winning Tucson Homes

Luis Ibarra and Teresa Rosano, AIA, LEED AP, formed Ibarra Rosano Design Architects in 1999 after graduating from the University of Arizona College of Architecture in their native Tucson. Since that time, they have specified Hakatai glass mosaic tile on several projects, including the award-winning project “The Six” in Tucson. Faced with the task of planning and designing six detached single-family homes at the back of an infill development, Ibarra and Rosano relied on their commitment to a belief in the power of space and its connection to the outside world. Hakatai glass tile played an important part by helping to create an airy, open feel in each master bathroom, acting to reflect the light that shines in from the shower windows to provide balance and a smooth transition to the outdoors.

225 square feet of glass tile from Hakatai’s Classic series was used in each of the master bathrooms in the L-shaped homes. The neutral color Hail runs the length of the narrow bathrooms. The shower walls and floors are surfaced with the color Ice Green or the soft white color Pearl. The result is a cool, soothing radiance, in harmony with the Arizona sun that graces the room through the full window that acts as the third shower wall.

“The design goal of all our projects is to create great space and connection,” said Rosano. “The Six, and specifically the bathrooms, were no different. Shower windows open to planted light wells, filling the space with balanced light and connecting with the outdoors. The Hakatai glass mosaics used have a simple, clean look that helps create an open feel. Their cool, beautiful color adds interest and helps reflect light into the space while remaining subtle and understated. We’ve used Hakatai tile for a number of years and on several projects.”

Ibarra Rosano Design Architects have garnered local, national and international acclaim with their work, and The Six received several distinctions including the AIA Southern Arizona 2008 “Home of the Year,” as well as a merit award from AIA Southern Arizona. The Six also received a merit award from Residential Architect Magazine for Single Family Production Housing – Detached, 2009.

Glass Tile Makes Bathroom Sparkle

Modern Artistic Playful Interiors, Inc., or M.A.P. Interiors, has remained true to their brand name in Southern California with a little help from Hakatai glass mosaic tile. Principal Sylvia Beez keeps a sharp eye out for “unique objects for the modern home,” and has found the variety of colors and styles of Hakatai mosaic tile to be just that.

In her recent remodel of a private residence in Orange County, Beez had little to work with when she encountered the small, outdated master bathroom. With no room to expand the space, her only other option was to make it “special” and more modern by selecting the right surfacing materials. To complement new modern vestibule-style sinks, wood cabinetry and stylish hanging lamps, Beez and M.A.P. Interiors selected the color Safari Blend from Hakatai’s Aventurine series for two full walls. She also created an accent band from the Aventurine series color Sage that divides the room and makes it feel more spacious.

“Hakatai’s glass tile brought in the sparkle,” said Beez. “We had to work with a small space so we brought in high-quality materials for the surfacing. Hakatai has great, quality products, and it helped make the space very vibrant. The customer really liked it. I have a lot of sources around me where I could get similar products, but Hakatai works really well with designers and you can rely on the quality. And the customer service is excellent, that’s why I keep coming back. We are very happy with the company.”

Hakatai Tile Transforms Yogurt Shop

Hakatai recently played a major role in the transformation of an old bank in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego, California, into the Yogurt Cup, an ice cream and frozen yogurt shop. Moe Oram, owner of the Yogurt Cup, used the custom design tools at www.hakatai.com to make his own custom blend and custom gradient with Luster and Classic series tile from Hakatai. The Yogurt Cup now features a yellow to blue glass mosaic gradient on a 50 square-foot accent wall, as well as a colorful mosaic blend in the front of the store. Oram selected a retro color scheme to create a fun and funky, “Austin Powers-type” vibe for his new restaurant.

“It’s very simple to create your own custom blend or custom gradient with Hakatai,” said Oram. “It’s almost common sense to just go to the site and create a blend. It turned out very nice. I was looking for that mosaic look. I’m a builder by trade and had used Hakatai before. I designed the actual colors in there and it’s beautiful. The customers love it. It’s a fun place to be.”

Hakatai Tile Used in Boulder Co-working Space

The concept of “co-working,” referring to groups or individuals working independently in a shared office space, is an emerging trend in commercial design. The recently opened Candy Shop Creative Offices in Boulder, Colorado, exemplifies this idea. Joseph Vigil and Brandy LeMae, president and vice president, respectively, of VaST Architecture, opened the Candy Shop after renovating the mixed-use building for their own office headquarters. Recycled content glass mosaic tile from Hakatai was used in the shower room.

“We wanted to use the recycled glass tiles from Hakatai and we designed the bathroom with that in mind,” said LeMae. “We created a spa-like shower, and it’s one of my favorite rooms in the entire building. It has a real soft, soothing feel to it.”
VaST Architecture selected the Siberia Blend of paper-face mounted 1” x 2” tile, which features a mix of iridescent and matte finish tile.

Hakatai Mural Used in Michigan Residence

Inspired by the bright colors of a peacock’s feather, Ann Rosinski-Long of Genesee Ceramic Tile Distributors in Grand Rapids, Michigan, used Hakatai's Custom Mosaic Mural Program to turn an idea into a beautiful glass mosaic mural for a client’s home. After selecting a palette of iridescent glass mosaics, Rosinski-Long worked with designer Laura Haas of Laura & Co. to draw an image, which Hakatai’s experienced team of mosaic artists then translated into a hand-aligned, custom made mosaic mural. The mural was incorporated into the flooring at the base of a staircase to create a unique focal point for the lower-level walkout of the home.

“We loved the iridescent colors that Hakatai offers,” said Rosinski-Long. “We really played off of that in the design phase. One of our design clients at Genesee Ceramic Tile had a customer that wanted a mural of a peacock. So the designer and I sat down, drew the design, filled in all of the colors and sent it off to Hakatai. They did a rendering to match up all the colors, which we approved, and then sent it back. When we received the actual mural, Hakatai also included a package of mosaic glass tiles in case we needed to replace something. We were both very impressed with that. The customer service was awesome. Hakatai was very easy to work with. I actually did another mural in Michigan with Hakatai afterwards, and it came out very nice, too.”

In harmony with the rustic look of the Ashland-e series, these unique blends feature rich colors inspired by Mother Nature.
